Let’s face it, Christmas shopping with your kids in tow can be difficult at the best of times, but it is possible to have an effective, efficient and fun shopping experience with your children if you know how. There is a little advanced planning that you need, and a little cooperation from your children, but it can be done.

When you are on your shopping expedition, you need to ensure some and all of the following, including that the children are well rested, making sure that the shopping trip includes them, taking frequent breaks as well as incorporating activities that are appropriate for children so that the trip will seem like an adventure and not a chore.

Depending on the age of the children, it might be critical to ensure the children are well rested at the start of the shopping trip and that the trip does not last so long that the child will be tired out before the end of the trip. If you plan on Christmas shopping with a child who still takes daily naps, it might be worthwhile to plan your shopping trip after the child’s nap to ensure that the child has had sufficient rest. This will help prevent him or her running out of energy or becoming cranky during the shopping due to exhaustion.

While Shopping, it is important to take frequent breaks for the child’s benefit. This is important because children generally have short attention span than do adults, and are not likely to be able to cope for long periods of time on your shopping trip. Some good examples of when to take a break includes stopping for a small snack, taking a lunch break or visiting a play area in the mall or shopping center. Each of these breaks will give the child an opportunity to enjoy a break from the monotony of shopping.

It is also a good idea to incorporate activities appropriate for children during the shopping trip. Some activities include visiting stores that the child finds interesting, like a toy store for example. You would incorporate this activity late in shopping trip to help to ensure the child behaves for the majority of the trip.

It’s always a good idea to be ready for a number of unexpected situations when Christmas shopping with kids, but as long as you’re prepared, and have a contingency plan to avoid unpleasant public outbursts by the child, you will be well on your way to enjoying a great day shopping with your kids.
